As 2016 comes to an end, there is a certain buzz that starts building up at Monkey HQ. Though it’s really a never ending process, we are about to kick it into high gear preparing for the biggest, most awesome event we are a part of each year: Monkey Muster!
We often get a lot of questions about the Muster from folks who aren’t yet in the know. Well, the easiest way to bring everyone up to speed is to give a rundown of the fun, antics, and shenanigans from last year’s Monkey Muster IV.  Hinderer Knives innovated the concept of the user configurable knife with the legendary XM-18 folder. When the new Hinderer MP-1 folder made its debut people took notice how Rick and the gang were taking the configuration concept to the next level with the introduction of the Hinderer Modular Backspacer System (HMBS). The HMBS allowed the user to change out the backspacer of their knife without even taking the knife apart. Just loosen a set screw, and swap it out. Different materials, colors, and even functions are soon to come. Well, seeing as how the XM-18 is one of the most successful folders of all time, Rick created a retrofit kit that would allow the user to convert their XM-18 to HMBS. The kit comes with all the hardware you need to perform the conversion and an aluminum backspacer of your color choice. It is super easy to install, so we thought we would give you a quick run-down. Not to go on a rant, but all tools are not created equal (although you probably know that seeing as how you bought a Hinderer knife). So get decent drivers. This is by no means meant to be an all encompassing look at every finish they have used, but a quick explanation of the main ones used on the production knives. A FEW CAVEATS: There is no “perfect finish” for everybody. It’s kinda a “boxers or briefs” thing. Everybody has their likes and dislikes based on appearance and function. Secondly: Not sure everybody knows this, but stainless steel is not “rust proof” any steel can corrode if not taken care of. However, titanium CANNOT rust under any circumstances. It is a non-ferrous material. Therefore, when we speak of corrosion issues below, we are only referring to that finish on a STEEL blade. |
